Samsung’s new 5G network breaks record for fastest data transmission

Dave SmartierDec 5, 20173 7393 votes +3 rating

Samsung has a solution for frustrated Sky, BT and Virgin customers. Broadband is about to become so fast it will take a matter of seconds to download a movie or binge on an entire box set. Samsung is working on a technology that will dramatically increase home broadband across the UK and will finally mean Brits get the speeds they deserve, which has consistently fallen short for all providers.

5G is the next generation of mobile signal and it could soon be used to pump internet into homes more than 1,000 times quicker than the current UK average. This ludicrous speed would allow a 4K High Definition Hollywood blockbuster to be downloaded in the blink of an eye rather than hours.

Samsung’s new 5G network breaks recordThe reason 5G is so much quicker is due to its much larger bandwidth which basically means more data can be beamed to more people at much faster speeds, think of it like the M1 being turned into a 50-lane motorway. StarTech recently took a trip to South Korea to see what Samsung has in store and the technology looks mightily impressive.

5G could transform broadband in the UK with speeds of more than 20Gbps a genuine possibility.

Most UK homes currently have to cope with less than 20Mbps, that’s a whopping 1,000 times slower than this new technology. Another benefit to Samsung’s 5G network is that it can be installed without anyone needing to come near your home.

This is because 5G works like the current 4G signal, which transfers data to your smartphone, and means it can be beamed into homes without the need for any cables. And this is hugely important as it’s often these outdated wires that slow speeds down to a crawl.

Samsung plans to install its 5G network on lampposts around city streets with consumers simply needing a receiver in their home to benefit from the technology. These new speeds may sound far-fetched but to prove this technology works, Samsung is already testing its 5G network in the UK with London being the first to get the system installed.

Samsung is currently sending data across the capital at speeds of about 1Gbps which is more than 500 times faster than the UK average. These tests will continue over the coming months but Samsung is hoping that consumers may get the chance to use 5G sooner than you might think.

In fact it could be fully functional for some users as earlier as 2019 a date that, for many broadband users, can’t come soon enough. Samsung are not the only company working on 5G technology but they are investing huge amounts of time and money into this new technology. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Wonil Roh, Vice President, Next Generation Communications Business Team IT and Mobile Communications, said the entire industry is working fast with Samsung proud of what they have achieved so far.

5G is a very challenging area but Roh states the ultimate aim is to increase speeds, reduce latency and allow more people to connect at any time – something that is sure to be welcomed by anyone who suffers the daily issue of the UK’s dire broadband.

Earlier this year Which?

Managing Director of Home Services, Alex Neill, said: “Far too many households across the UK are suffering from slow broadband speeds, which can stop you being able to carry out essential daily tasks. We are encouraging everyone with broadband to use our speed checker so people can see if they are getting the speeds that they’ve been promised by their provider and find out how to complain if their speed is too slow.”
