Poll: In your opinion which smartphone shoots better in the dark?
Please vote (total: 23 votes)

Like the kings of night. The three main flagships of 2019. The “wide” module and night mode appeared in the new iPhone 11 Pro (finally, Apple users got what Android has had for a couple of years), the Huawei Mate 30 Pro has the largest mobile sensor and the first place in the ranking of DxOMark cameras with a huge separation from all competitors! And right behind it is the Galaxy Note10+. A real comparison of the quality of camera shooting in our wide review.

Cameras comparison: Mate 30 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+

Huawei Mate 30 Pro received four cameras, among them the module with the world’s largest sensor for a smartphone 1/1.54 inches and a resolution of 40 megapixels. And the size of the sensor physically brings the smartphone closer to the compact camera more than any software twists. The camera can shoot slow-motion video 256 times slower, video at 4K 60 frames/s and 4K time lapses. The module is primarily intended for shooting video. But it is also great for a photo, where it plays the role of a wide-angle camera.

The main module in the Huawei P30 Pro is the same as in the Mate 30 Pro, and their cameras shoot the same in any light. So the most important thing is a comparison in the evening and in the dark.

Ultra Wide Angle

Apple users have a new camera that shoots from a wide angle. These pictures appear on Instagram, accompanied by enthusiasm. But Android flagships have been able to do the same for more than a year. At the same time, the Apple’s wide-angle camera is made without optical stabilization and even without its own “night mode”! Nonsense?

Here’s how these smartphones shoot on a wide-angle camera at night:

iPhone 11 Pro MaxGalaxy Note 10+Mate 30 Pro

From left to right: iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro.

iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro

Predictably, Huawei Mate 30 Pro turned out to be the best: the sensor has high sensitivity and aperture ratio of f/1.8 optics. The viewing angle is less than competitors, and therefore less distortion at the edges. Galaxy Note 10+ with f/2.2 optics has worse detail and more noise, but we don’t lose in the “wideness”, and the color rendition is correct. The iPhone 11 Pro Max completely ruined the photo: solid blur and mess. Aperture f/2.4 is not suitable for night shots.

We turn on the night mode – and here is a surprise: wide-angle camera of the iPhone does not support such a mode. Instead, we take the Huawei P30 Pro for comparison. I wonder if the quality has improved in the new Mate?

P30 ProGalaxy Note 10+Mate 30 Pro

From left to right: P30 Pro, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro.

P30 Pro, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro

Smartphone Galaxy Note 10+ more than other cameras brightened the picture, but did it aggressively: the colors are oversaturated, halos appeared around the light sources. The P30 Pro has no such problems, but there are fewer details in the shadows. The photo from the Mate 30 Pro looks natural, there is little noise – the best quality version. Although the “wide-angle” in the Mate 30 Pro is not as wide as that of its competitors: the viewing angle is smaller, but there is less distortion at the edges of the frame.

Conclusions for wide-angle cameras:

  • Mate 30 Pro shoots best of all without a special mode. With night mode, the quality is even better.
  • The iPhone 11 Pro Max does not work in night mode, and without it – the quality in the dark is completely dull. Do not even turn on this camera at night.
  • Galaxy Note10 + does not cut anything, but photographs on the “four” with a minus.

Shooting on the main cameras

First, let’s see how smartphones cope without night mode:

iPhone 11 Pro MaxGalaxy Note 10+Mate 30 Pro

From left to right: iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro.

iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro

The difference is insignificant, the pictures from the Note 10+ and iPhone are generally easy to confuse. The only difference is the Mate 30 Pro: it has slightly better detail, and more details are visible in the shadows. Inside the cafe you can even see the logo on the watch – “The New Era”. But the bright areas are a bit overexposed, the competitors have different details on the chandelier and on the sign.

Turn on night mode

On Samsung and Huawei smartphones, this can be done forcibly, on the iPhone 11 Pro Max – it turns on automatically when there is very little light. Apple’s philosophy is this: why load a person, let the software cope. On the one hand – thanks, on the other – I want more control. Sometimes it seems to the camera that there is enough light, but you want to see more through the night mode. But it will not work, and as a result, evening shots, where there are a certain number of light sources, with the iPhone 11 Pro will also be inferior to competitors, like the old iPhone Xs. But people often shoot in the evening, and not in complete darkness. The logic of Apple is not clear to us.

From left to right: iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro.

iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro

The Galaxy Note 10+ night mode looks like a long exposure shot: the cars are blurry, you can see traces of leaf movement on the tree. To shoot motionless objects is easy, to catch “sharp” people and animals is difficult.

Algorithms Apple and Huawei better recognize moving objects and from the heap of captured frames leave only the one where the maximum sharpness over the entire field of the frame. And already mix the details from other shot with it. The Mate 30 Pro handles this better, its dynamic range is wider, and there are less glare from the lights.

Total darkness shooting

Finally, the most difficult conditions. And here you can see right away that competitors almost caught up with Huawei in night shots processing. The iPhone and Note 10+ are not much inferior to the Mate 30 Pro in sharpness and detail, and even better in color rendering.

iPhone 11 Pro MaxGalaxy Note 10+Mate 30 Pro

From left to right: iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro.

iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro

Here you can see again how the Mate 30 Pro cuts off blurred parts of the frame, look at the fountain. This is again the subject of shooting moving subjects on the Mate 30 Pro. Let’s give credit to Apple: the iPhone will handle such complex shots on the first attempt. Although it turned out later than the others, and more expensive, and so far not perfect.

iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro

But whether it is worth buying the Mate 30 Pro because of the cool night mode? We saw the photos taken on it and the P30 Pro. As they say, find two differences. The shots are exactly the same, although Huawei announced a 20-30% improvement in noise reduction due to the new image processor in the Kirin 990. Perhaps the potential will be revealed later.

What about shooting video in the dark? The new “movie camera” Mate 30 Pro has a very high light sensitivity: the maximum when shooting video is ISO 51200. Competitors have an average of ISO 6400-12800. That is, in the pitch darkness, the Mate 30 Pro will see something, but the rivals will not. We check in the most “heavy” format – 4K 60 frames/s.

In the first test, the Mate 30 Pro revealed more detail, and less noise. Galaxy Note 10+ generally produces some kind of radiation noise, the video is solid artifacts. Although the iPhone “makes noise” less, almost nothing is visible.

iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro

In the second test, there is more light, but the Mate 30 Pro continues to aggressively suppress noise, losing a lot of detail, artifacts appear. An iPhone silently (literally) shot a relatively clean, vivid picture, the buildings clearly appears in the distance and the road’s markings are clear too.

iPhone 11 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 10+, Mate 30 Pro

Bonus: Huawei Mate 30 Pro vs iPhone in good light

The aspect ratio of the wide-angle Mate 30 Pro sensor is 3:2, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is standard 4:3. Therefore, photos have different proportions. Plus, the iPhone has a wider viewing angle, so there is more distortion at the edges. But even if you look at the center, you can see that Mate shows more details.

It is pointless to compare the frames taken during the day on the main camera: now all the top models shoot the same, the differences will be only revealed in the white balance (iPhone takes a “warm” picture) and the amount of noise in the shadows at the edges of the frame. judge for yourselves...

Briefly summarize each smartphone

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ showed a good result. The night mode is almost not inferior to that in Huawei, only meticulous photographers will notice the difference.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max cuts Huawei’s nearly two-year lag. But given the twofold difference in price between it and the P30 Pro, buyers expected more. It’s bad that you can’t manually turn on night mode – we depend on automation. It’s bad that “wide-angle” does not support night mode at all. But for Apple users, it’s still a huge step forward.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro can be called the most versatile camera phone. According to the photo – this is the best smartphone for today, here we agree with the DxOMark rating. The main camera shoots like the P30 Pro, “wide-angle” – generally much better than others (the picture is cropped in “night mode”, but the sharpness is higher).

The US has named the 20 best smartphones. The rating was subjective...

Business Insider has published its own rating of the best smartphones. Journalists evaluated the price-performance ratio of devices. The leader of the rating was unexpected. This is the recently presented by the Chinese OnePlus 7T. It costs $600 and has a beautiful design, a triple main camera, a good battery, and an accurate fingerprint scanner. Among the flaws, journalists highlighted the lack of wireless charging and certified water protection.

In second place is the iPhone 11 with a cost of $700. It was praised for the simplicity of the operating system, the A13 chipset, like the top model, excellent shooting quality and wireless charging. Journalists did not like the lack of a headphone jack, a fringe, slow wired charging and low screen refresh rate.

In third place was another Chinese OnePlus 7 Pro for $670. The authors of the article appreciated a powerful processor, excellent autonomy, super-fast charging, as well as a screen with 90 Hz. The journalists did not like the same as the OnePlus 7T, the lack of water protection.
