Chinese Huawei introduced the Mate 30 series of smartphones with 5G communication support, but without pre-installed Google services. The presentation took place on September 19 in Germany.
Smartphones Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro run on an open version of Android with the EMUI 10 shell. Devices did not receive Google services, including the Play Market app store, Google search, YouTube video service, and so on. Instead, Huawei offered users its own app store – AppGallery.
Huawei cannot release licensed Android smartphones with Google services due to the U.S. authorities blacklisting Huawei and barring US companies from selling their services and technologies to it. At the presentation, representatives did not talk about U.S. sanctions and the inability to use Google services.
Both devices received a screen with a diagonal of about 6.6 inches with a resolution of FullHD+. Smartphones work on Huawei’s own processor – Kirin 990 with a 5G module. At the presentation, Huawei compared the new smartphones with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, Apple introduced in early September.
The edges of the Mate 30 Pro display are on the side faces. Because of this, the company moved the power button closer to the rear panel, and refused the control buttons, replacing them with touch edges. Users can adjust the volume by swiping their fingers across the screen – the function works on both sides of the screen. The Mate 30 has a completely flat screen.
Mate 30 Pro received a battery with a capacity of 4500 mAh, Mate 30 – 4200 mAh. In addition to 40-watt wired charging, Huawei introduced 27-watt wireless charging, the company called it the fastest in the world. The new phones received support for the Always-on Display mode: even in a locked state, the screen always shows the user the date, time, battery power and missed calls.
The “notch” (cut out) of smartphones is equipped with a 3D face scanner with a face recognition sensor and allows you to hide notifications if someone else but the device owner is looking at the screen.
Both phones will come in six colors, two versions received an artificial leather back cover – orange and green. In addition, the Mate 30 RS with a design from Porsche, made of genuine leather, will be released.
Huawei focused on the quality of shooting photos and videos, and invited Leica again to develop cameras. The Mate 30 received a 40MP camera, a 16MP wide angle camera and an 8MP telephoto lens. The Mate 30 Pro received a module for four cameras: two for 40 megapixels, one of which is specifically designed for shooting video and supports shooting in 4K resolution, as well as slow-motion shooting at a frequency of 7680 frames per second, which allows you to slow down the video by 256 times. The third camera with an 8 megapixel telephoto lens, the fourth is a depth sensor that measures the distance to the subject and helps blur the background when portrait shooting.
Huawei has not yet announced the start of sales and the cost of Huawei Mate 30 and Huawei Mate 30 Pro smartphones.
